CAAS Executive Director
The Executive Committee of CAAS invites applications for the position of Executive Director. This three-year position has the possibility of renewal, carries a modest stipend, and commences January 1, 2026. The Executive Director of CAAS needs to be an organized and trustworthy administrator, an effective communicator, and have mastery of the financial duties of the position. An M.A./Ph.D in Classical Studies or M.A. Ed. in Classical Languages would be advantageous to applicants, but is not required.
The CAAS By-Laws describe the position as follows: The Executive Director shall serve as the official representative of the Corporation and oversee the day-to-day management of the Corporation’s affairs. The Executive Director shall ensure compliance with all internal rules and regulations, shall coordinate all meetings of the Corporation and shall perform such other duties as the Board may specify.
We provide below a brief overview of the major components of this position.
Spring and Fall Meetings:
To work in conjunction with the Program Coordinator;
To recommend to the Board of Directors suitable meeting places;
To develop and maintain working relationships with the managers of the approved hotels;
To sign all hotel contracts providing the appropriate number of bedrooms, meeting rooms, book display areas, lunch services, special committee sessions, the Friday night fall meeting dinner and the Saturday annual luncheon;
To monitor and assure the optimal functioning of the meetings;
To check the final invoices and submit them to the Treasurer for payment.
Finances:
To maintain consistent communication with the Baker Tilly Company in the preparation and delivery of the annual CAAS 990 tax forms;
To work closely with the Treasurer by supplying copies of all expenditures inclusive of those made with the Executive Director's CAAS credit card.
Johns Hopkins University Press:
To utilize their computer services informing all CAAS members as to the dates and places of both planned meetings;
To track membership and lapsed payments.
