Position Description
The Department of Classics at Case Western Reserve University invites applications for a Full-Time Lecturer in Classics to commence in August of 2026 for a period of one year, with the possibility of renewal contingent on need and satisfactory job performance. The successful candidate will teach 6 courses during the academic year, including a combination of courses in Greek and Latin (elementary, intermediate, or advanced), Classics courses in translation such as Greek Civilization, and courses that fulfill the university’s Communication Intensive (CI) requirement such as ANEE 210 (“Ancient Near Eastern and Egyptian Literature”), CLSC 204 (“Heroes and Hustlers in Roman Literature”), CLSC 240 (“From Sappho to Elagabulus: Gender and Sexuality in Greece and Rome”), or CI courses of their own design. An internal candidate for the position has been identified.
Description of the Department of Classics:
The CWRU Classics Department is primarily an undergraduate program, with majors and minors in Classical Philology, Classical Civilization, and Ancient Near Eastern and Egyptian Studies. Class sizes in the languages are small, CI courses are capped at 18, and the students are generally both able and motivated. We also have a Graduate Certificate program (postbac), and an MA Program. The university has excellent resources for teaching and research, including membership in the OhioLINK library system. The department faculty comprises an interdisciplinary group of colleagues, all of whom maintain significant connections with other areas of the humanities. Recently the department’s focus has expanded to encompass the civilizations of the Ancient Near East and Egypt. In keeping with the department’s current profile, then, we seek a versatile and well-rounded applicant who would be comfortable teaching more general courses on the Ancient Mediterranean World.
Description of CWRU:
The campus of CWRU sits in the cultural center of Cleveland known as “University Circle,” which is home to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the Cleveland Botanical Garden, the Western Reserve Historical Society, and the Cleveland Orchestra. Downtown is just fifteen minutes away, with a vibrant Theater District, the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame, the Great Lakes Science Center, Ohio City (with many small breweries and a fresh produce market), and the homes of the Cavaliers, Guardians, and Browns. Two sandy beaches on Lake Erie are nearby, and the city is ringed by an impressive number of parks for hiking and outdoor activities, including Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
