The Department of History and Classical Studies at McGill University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Ancient Greek History, with a specialization in any period from the beginning of the Iron Age through the Hellenistic era, whose research agenda meaningfully engages material culture. The successful candidate will also hold the MacNaughton chair in Classics. The position is effective August 1st, 2024. The successful applicant must hold a PhD by the time of appointment. Salary will be negotiable and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate will teach survey courses in ancient Mediterranean history, as well as upper-level and graduate courses in Ancient Greek history, and will have the opportunity to guide graduate student research. An ability to teach Ancient Greek language at all levels is essential. The capacity to develop experiential learning opportunities, whether in Montreal or abroad, is an asset. A commitment to inclusive classroom pedagogy and mentorship is a must.

Research specialization is open, but preference will be given to candidates whose agenda and methodological approaches complement, but do not duplicate, those of the current Classics faculty.

We are interested in colleagues who will play a substantial role in charting the future directions of the Classics programme, the History and Classical Studies Department, and the field, through their research, teaching, and service contributions.

Applications should be submitted electronically on McGill's employment portal, Workday and should include the following in a single PDF file:

  • cover letter
  • curriculum vitae
  • One-page research statement describing the candidate's ongoing work and 5-year goals.
  • One-page teaching statement on the candidate's efforts (both tested and aspirational) to represent to students the complexity and diversity of the ancient Greek world within its Mediterranean and global context
  • A concise, representative sample of written work (e.g., a published article, essay, or book chapter, or a chapter from a completed or in-progress dissertation)

Once application materials have been submitted, candidates will be notified via McGill’s Employment Portal Workday to provide the contact information for three referees. These referees will then be contacted by Workday to upload their reference letters.

Enquiries may be directed to jobsearch.history@mcgill.ca. For full consideration, applicants should submit by Nov 15, 2023.
