The Department of Classical Languages and Literatures at Smith College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning to advanced, to begin in July 2024. In the wake of retirements, this position will offer the opportunity to be involved in reshaping an undergraduate Classics program for the twenty-first century. Candidates should be prepared to engage actively with diverse students across the liberal arts, and with colleagues across the curriculum. Teaching responsibilities will regularly include Latin and Greek language and literature at all undergraduate levels, and courses in translation according to the candidate’s interests and expertise. Cross-disciplinary teaching is encouraged. While flexibility is important in a small undergraduate department, we seek a Latinist with a literary and cultural focus, whose work falls in the late Republic or early-middle Empire. The candidate must also have a record of active engagement with new directions in the field, possibly including but not limited to race and ethnicity in antiquity, environmental issues or science and technology in the ancient world, uses and abuses of the classical tradition and other reception studies, and/or public humanities. Ph.D. in Classics is expected by the time of appointment. Candidates from groups underrepresented in Classics are encouraged to apply. First round of Zoom interviews planned for early January.
