Hampden-Sydney College, a private liberal arts college for men, invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in the Department of Classics to begin August 2024. A Ph.D. in Classics or a closely related field is required by the time of appointment.

We seek an enthusiastic, broadly trained generalist with a record of success in the classroom to teach all levels of Latin and Greek, a wide variety of Classical culture courses and courses in translation, and courses in the College’s interdisciplinary Core Cultures Program or Rhetoric Program. We seek a dedicated teacher/scholar to help expand our curriculum in ways that will build bridges with programs in other departments and engage and energize our diverse student body, both majors/minors and students drawn to Classics purely out of interest. The area of research specialization is open.

Tenure-track appointments carry a six-course teaching load per academic year, plus one additional course every third year. Hampden-Sydney College both expects and supports excellence in teaching, a successful program of professional development and scholarship, and a willingness to work with colleagues on professional service responsibilities.

Hampden-Sydney College is a selective liberal arts institution enrolling approximately 1000 students. Founded in 1775, it is the tenth oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. Our beautiful 1300-acre campus includes hiking/biking trails, a Frisbee golf course and an adventure high ropes and zip line course. The campus is less than 7 miles from downtown Farmville, which includes a historic walkable downtown with a local brewery, art and craft galleries, restaurants, and a rails-to-trail state park that extends over 15 miles in each direction from town. Five additional state parks are located within 30 miles and offer camping, fishing, hiking, boating, swimming, and horseback riding. Farmville is also home to Longwood University and the Moton Museum, which is listed on the US Civil Rights Trail. Farmville is located 65 miles west of Richmond, 50 miles east of Lynchburg, and 75 miles south of Charlottesville, providing abundant opportunities for cultural and artistic resources, field trips, and employment opportunities for partners.
