Ralston College invites applications for the position of Professor of Greek. We seek to appoint a talented pedagogue capable of teaching Ancient Greek at the undergraduate and graduate level. Our innovative academic programs combine intensive reading of texts in the Western canon with the immersive study of Greek and Latin in academic and cultural contexts where these languages are employed in instruction and conversation. As such, the successful candidate should have a fluent, spoken command of Ancient Greek and be able to teach entirely in Greek; any candidates without experience in speaking and teaching in Ancient Greek must display a commitment to acquiring these skills rapidly. Candidates must also be willing to use the Greek system of pronunciation for all periods of Greek. Knowledge of Modern Greek, an active command of Latin, and a broad knowledge of the Western canon are highly desirable, and the strongest candidates will have active research interests in the field. A Ph.D. (or equivalent training and experience) is required.
The successful candidate will join a growing and vibrant academic community, teaching on Ralston’s campus in Savannah, Georgia, for most of the year; participation in a two-month Greek language residency program, which entails living and teaching in Greece, will also be required. The candidate will also contribute to the administrative operations of the College, and, above all, have the heart and mind to help build an academic institution devoted to the Humanities.
Ralston College is a new institution of higher learning in Savannah. A revival and reinvention of the traditional university, Ralston College is committed to the human flourishing that the liberal arts both represent and enable. Ralston offers its students transformative encounters with the works of intellect and imagination that have, for centuries, been central to humanistic learning. It does so in the context of an inspiring collegiate community of scholars, teachers, and colleagues who value deep learning, free inquiry, and the appreciation of all forms of culture.
The position is full-time and open both to early-career scholars and to more established academics. Initial appointment is for one year (renewable). Salary will correspond to the candidate’s level of experience. Applicants should send a CV, letter of interest (in English, Latin, or Ancient Greek), and a piece of original writing composed in Ancient Greek (of at least one page) to Professor Joseph Conlon (employment@ralston.ac). Letters of recommendation and additional material will be requested after the initial interview. A portion of this interview will be conducted in Ancient Greek.
Review of applications will begin on January 29th and will continue until the position is filled. The successful candidate will be expected to start no later than June 15th, 2024.
All qualified applicants will receive equal consideration for employment.
