Position Summary

The Managing Editor is an enthusiastic, organized, and detail-oriented member of the ANS publications program, responsible for managing and shepherding ANS publications projects from acceptance to publication. The Managing Editor exercises quality oversight of any outside contractors working on publications and liaises with our printers and distributors on matters regarding shipments, inventory, metadata, technical specifications, etc. Additionally, the Managing Editor will be able to copyedit, content edit, and/or typeset and lay out publications. This individual is the only employee 100% allocated to the publications program.

The American Numismatic Society has one of the most extensive academic numismatic publishing operations in the world, having published well over 150 books in the last 100+ years. The ANS publishes three periodicals: the American Journal of Numismatics (our flagship, peer-reviewed, annual journal, published since 1866), the Journal of Early American Numismatics (published semi-annually since 2018, and from 1960-2017 as the Colonial Newsletter), and the ANS Magazine (published quarterly, and since 2002). Presently, the ANS publishes two to three peer-reviewed monographs per year.

The Managing Editor reports to the Deputy Director.

Essential Functions

  • Eagerness and enthusiasm to learn the nuances of numismatic publication, and to help drive the advancement of academic numismatic publication with an eye toward innovation and vision.
  • Managing in-production publications from acceptance to publication.
  • Ensuring quality control in the editing and production process.
  • Exercising oversight of any contractors working on ANS publications.
  • Copyediting and/or typesetting and layout of a select number of ANS publications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with authors, editors, contractors, printers, and distributors.
  • Willingness to acquire skills to work on any stage of production that might be needed to expedite particular projects, such as copyediting, preparing images for production, or entering corrections to typeset and laid-out text.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree is required and a master’s degree is preferred. Previous experience in publications is required. Ideally, the successful candidate will have experience editing, copyediting, and/or typesetting academic publications and have a background in numismatics, archaeology, classical studies, art history, history, or a related field.

This is a position that demands the ability to organize and manage projects well.

The ideal candidate will possess excellent verbal and writing skills, analytical skills, and a keen attention to detail. The successful candidate will be able to work independently as well as in a team-oriented setting. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe InDesign is critical, as is familiarity with standard conventions and processes in the academic publication process.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range is $50,000–$70,000 per annum. The salary offered to the successful candidate will be based on qualifications and level of prior experience, as well as the work model (remote, hybrid, or in-person). The ANS offers a generous benefits package, including health insurance, dental insurance, paid vacation leave, 10% employer contributions toward an employee’s retirement account after one year of employment, and more.
