The Department of Classics at Carleton College invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor position to begin September 1, 2024. This is a benefits-eligible appointment for one year, with the possibility of renewal. We are particularly interested in candidates committed to teaching a diverse student body.
We are seeking an entry-level teacher-scholar who can teach Latin and Greek at all levels and is passionate about working in a liberal arts setting. The position will involve teaching languages as well as in-translation courses on literature and culture. This position will teach five courses over Carleton’s three 10-week terms: most likely, these will include three courses in the Latin sequence (101, 103, 204) and two additional courses, to be chosen based on the candidate's interests and the department's needs.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in hand by the time of appointment. The field of specialization is open, but we are especially interested in someone with expertise in Roman literature and who will expand our department’s current offerings. Additional areas of interest for teaching may (but do not need to) include: the ancient Mediterranean beyond Greece and Rome; digital humanities; public scholarship; and material culture. For more information about our Classics program and offerings, please visit the website at https://www.carleton.edu/classics/.
Carleton is a highly selective liberal arts college with a student body of approximately 2,000. Located in the thriving two-college town of Northfield, Minnesota, it is forty-five miles from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, in easy reach of a vibrant metropolitan area that is home to three million people and rich cultural resources.
To apply, please visit the Carleton College website (go.carleton.edu/carletonjobs) and submit an online application that includes (1) a cover letter that introduces the candidate, their teaching and research interests and strengths, and their goals over the next two years; (2) a c.v.; (3) short descriptions of two proposed in-translation literature or culture courses (150-300 words each); (4) a concise (one-page) statement about teaching in an undergraduate liberal arts environment and how the candidate would contribute to a college community that embraces a diversity of people and perspectives as one of its core values; and (5) contact information for three referees (whom we will contact to solicit letters after an initial round of reviewing applications).
The deadline for receipt of applications is March 21, 2024. Preliminary Zoom interviews will be scheduled in early April. For further inquiries, please contact Prof. Alex Knodell at aknodell@carleton.edu.
